The general consensus is “Yes”… as long as you prepare yourself in advance for the cultural differences, dress conservatively, and behave in a civilized manner.
The article below about the safety in Egypt was written in 2006, but still holds true today:

It provides scientific & medical information, which were outlined in the Quran well before scientific studies were done proving them.
Did you know that fish intake prevents memory loss?
“Fish are among the creatures which Allah, all praises to him, Had subjected to us as a food and a remedy, many studies verified that consumption of fish has medical benefits related to the treatment of memory loss and many other diseases. And from them both you eat fresh tender meat (fish), and derive the ornaments that you wear. And you see the ships cleaving (the sea-water as they sail through it), that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may give thanks’ (12: Fair).” … Read More.
(This is just ONE of the many miracles of the Quran. Read more here: http://kaheel7.com/eng/.)
